21 February, 2001I found the quote, from the local English language journal, in all seriousness:Roger, 20, seemed to have it made: a student of business at Nice University, he had been promised a job in Sophia Antipolis and, to add to his seeming good fortune, had got engaged to Caroline, a fellow student. Then, a few months back, it all went sour. Roger went to a party in Villefranche and met a girl who got him intrigued with talk of how he could achieve "spiritual growth". He wasn't religious but agreed to meet the girl again, went to meetings in Nice and finally to "a retreat" near Gap. Result: he's now abandoned his studies (and Caroline) and is back in Gap as a fully fledged member of a U.S.-based sect. His parents are in despair. "It's unbelievable," says his father, an airline executive, "you just can't talk to him. He's like a mental robot." · phone from US: 303-952-0404 · in France: 06 18 26 09 61 · · 2, av. des Ecureuils · appt. 9 · 40510 Seignosse, France · andrew08©andrewswift.com |
